  • About Me

    Manager & Master Mariner with 48 years of experience in the dry cargo shipping sector

    Retired from full time employment in 2021, after leading the Ship Management and New Building teams of Pacific Basin Shipping (one of the world's leading owners and operators of modern Handyzise and Supramax dry bulk ships) from 2010 to 2020.

    • Managed growth of it's owned fleet from 35 ships to 117 ships during these 11 years, with focus on the safety of crew and the environment
    • Led, developed and constantly improved in-house ship management activity, which included crewing, HSEQ, technical management, and newbuilding making Pacific Basin, one of the world’s largest and most admired dry bulk companies
    • Inspired a team of 4200 people to maintain the fleet in mint condition (maintain all ships as < 5 years old irrespective of age)
    • Mentored and developed people for career progression and leadership positions within Pacific Basin, including my own successor
    • Rigorous HSEQ KPIs and cost control of ship management under my leadership has set the bar amongst peers both in Hong Kong and throughout the world
    • Launched several inspiring campaigns, including: '22 Owners, 22 Crew', 'Make Complacency History with 5 Focus Areas'....etc.
    • “Zero Defect in External Check through Good Self Check” launched in 2004 for safe ship operations and management of the vessel resulted in Pacific Basin fleet achieving up to 81% success in PSC inspections, minimal downtime, and maximizing revenue. Pacific Basin won the Hong Kong Marine Department award for Outstanding Performance in PSC Inspections for 12 years in the 13 years period from 2008 until 2020
    • The comprehensive in-house ship management division collected multiple awards from Lloyd's List, Seatrade, BIMCO and IBJ over the years for best ship manager, safety, people development, CSR and environmental issues. Pacific Basin's ESG Report 2020

    Projects

    • Built 25 ships in Japan and China with focus on operational reliability and sustainable OPEX for 25 years with an in-house new building supervision team
    • Retrofitted 28 Supramax ships with cost efficient and reliable EGCS (exhaust gas scrubbers) within 13 months prior to IMO 2020 global Sulphur cap coming in force with negligible variance from project estimate
    • Ordered BWTS for >100 ships and retrofitted >60 ships with CAPEX, OPEX and reliable make for IMO's BWMC
    • Enhanced techno-commercial performance and bottom line of owned fleet with several energy efficiency and innovative projects to enhance voyage returns

    Representation in industry

    • Represented Pacific Basin on classification society committees – DNV-GL, ABS & NK
    • Served as Chairman of Standard P&I Club’s Asia loss advisory committee from 2013~2016
    • Served as Vice Chairman of INTERCARGO (International Association of Dry Cargo Ship Owners) for 6 years from 2015 to 2020

    Serving as "Special Adviser to the Management Committee" of INTERCARGO from January 2021

     

    Founded "JP MARITIME LIMITED" in Hong Kong in February 2021, out of passion for shipping and to add value to companies with strategy and people development to "leave people and ships better than they found them".

     

    Contracted as 'Senior Advisor to McKinsey & Company' from June 2021

    Passion for inspiring and mentoring with a “never give up attitude”

     

    Completed 12 Oxfam Trail Walker events (100 km walk at a stretch on MacLehose Trail over 23 hills with a cumulative elevation gain of over 4950 meters) from 2003~2016 and raised >HK$1 million charity for Oxfam for poverty alleviation projects. Motivated 11 hikers to complete this challenging event and hiked >16,000 kms in Hong Kong.
